After one unmemorable season as the Anaheim Amigos, a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), this franchise became the Los Angeles Stars in 1968, where Hall of Famer Bill Sharman became head coach. Poor attendance prompted a relocation to Utah in 1970. A record crowd of over 13,000 fans was on hand when the Stars defeated the Kentucky Colonels to win the 1971 ABA Championship. The Stars were the first professional basketball club to incorporate a pre-game shootaround.
