The Houston Aeros were established in 1972 as the Dayton Aeros, one of the 12 original members of the World Hockey Association (WHA). However, the city didn’t have a suitable arena so the team was quickly moved to Houston, where they became one of the league’s most successful teams, on the ice and at the ticket window.
In their second season, former NHL great Gordie Howe came out of retirement and joined the Aeors to play alongside his sons Mark and Marty. Despite their popularity and consistently high level of play, the Aeros were not seriously considered as part of the proposed merger with the National Hockey League (NHL), and the team disbanded before the WHA’s final campaign.
In 1994, the International Hockey League (IHL) granted Houston an expansion franchise that was named the Houston Aeros. After the collapse of the IHL in 2001, they, along with a few other clubs, joined the American Hockey League (AHL). In 2013, they moved to Iowa and became the Iowa Wild.
